City of Coronado Issues Ban on Smoking in Most Public Areas

Posted by: kateg 6 years, 12 months ago

After a 6 hour City Council Meeting last night, the Coronado City Council voted 4-1 to ban smoking in most public areas of Coronado.  The ban will include outdoor dining areas on public property, on all sidewalks, and within 25 feet of outdoor dining areas.  The ban does not cover any privately owned outdoor dining areas like McPs Pub or the Coronado Yacht Club.

The revised Smoking Ban expands the current ban that included local beaches and parks.  The revised ban makes Coronado's smoking ordinance amongst the most stringent in San Diego County.

Local business owner Michael O'Connor of the Firehouse Grill, argued against the ban saying that the City should not get involved on business decisions, like banning smoking.

However, more than 280 people responded to the online survey and a majority of the respondents were in favor of the ban.  Ultimately, the City Council voted in favor of the ban.
