Opening Day at the Del Mar Races Today!
Posted by: kateg 6 years, 7 months ago
Today is opening day at the Del Mar Races. Gates will open at 11:30 and the first post is at 2:00.
People across Southern California will show up to see the horses and hats at Opening Day, as the Del Mar Races is a favorite Summertime activity of San Diegans. This year marks the 76th year of the races. Just one year after the inaugural season, the famous Seabiscuit-Ligaroti match race was held on August 12 and drew 20,000 to the track and a nationwide radio audience. After a furious duel, Seabiscuit under George (The Iceman) Woolf and 130 pounds beats Ligaroti and Noel (Spec) Richardson at 115 by a nose.
The 2013 season lasts through September 4. There are many differet events that the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club puts on in conjunction with the season, including contests and concerts. Click this link for a calendar of events.
