For those of you who don't know Steve, he is a fixture here in Coronado. Steve has Cerebral Palsy (CP) and drives around town on his wheel chair. He lives here in Coronado with his family and he has never let his disability hold him back. In fact, on Steve's website www.wamplerfoundation.org, he says,
"Over the years, I’ve learned to not only live with my disability, but to thrive, and I want to ensure that others have the same opportunity."
Ensuring others that others have the same opportunity is exactly what he has done. The Stephen J. Wampler Foundationraises money to send children with disabilities to Camp Nejedly in the Sierras where they have the opportunity to camp, water ski, scuba dive, and so much more. The Camp also focuses on giving each child a chance to fulfill their dreams. According to Steve's website, since opening in 2002, Camp Nejedly has hosted thousands of kids with "physical and often economic limitations" and shown them that they are capable of reaching any goals they set for themselves.
In order motivate disabled youth and to raise money to expand his foundation, Steve set out to climb the El Capitan Mountain in Yosemite. In September 2010, Steve became the first man with CP to climb El Capitan ("El Cap"). Steve describes El Cap on his website as,
"a sheer vertical rock wall and a legendary challenge, even for seasoned climbers. Experts gave me less than 10% chance of being able to complete the climb."Share on Twitter Share on Facebook
