Coronado Speed Festival
Fleet Week San Diego
Fleet Week "honors and celebrates the men and women of the US Military through public events that entertain and alliances that thank and support these heros." This year, the 14th annual Coronado Speed Festival is taking place on Saturday, September 24, and Sunday, September 25 on Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island. The festival is open to the public, and ticket prices range from $25-$45 but Children until 12 and Active Duty Military and Dependents get in free!
The idea of the Speed Festival originated in 1997 when organizers wanted to find a way to pay tribute to the local military, gain more exposure for the San Diego Military Community, and incorporate a racing event. They decided to call the event the Coronado Speed Festival and they decided to bring in vintage cars from around the country to NAS North Island. The creators made a "spectator friendly" 1.7 mile track on the runways and taxiways at North Island. Visitors had the opportunity to interact with the drivers, tour the racecar pits and learn about racing's history. Originally, the event was put on by the Holiday Bowl, but it has since transitioned to be part Fleet Week.
Fleet week is a US Navy, Marine Corps, and Coastguard tradition to honor the service men and women of the military. Coronado Speed Festival has become the marquee event of the month-long fleet week celebrations.
On the Coronado Speed Festival Fleet Week Website, the organizers extended a thank you by saying,
"Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival would like to extend a very special “thank you” to the drivers of these unique vintage cars that continue to participate at America's “Race at the Base” year after year. Without these men and women dedicated to their passion – racing – and in honoring the United States servicemen, the Coronado Speed Festival would not be what it is today. In fact, without these extraordinary individuals who travel near and far, this fine event would not exist."
The 2011 Race Categories are as follows:
