Froomin Named New Coronado Police Chief
CORONADO, CA (April 23, 2013) - Jon Froomin, a 30-year veteran of the Foster City Police Department, has been chosen as the City of Coronado's new police chief, City Manager Blair King announced today.
Froomin, 45, has served as captain in Foster City in San Mateo County since 2004. He was selected from a list of seven top candidates narrowed down from a field of more than 100 applicants.
"We are extremely pleased to welcome Jon to Coronado," King said. "He has demonstrated himself as a strong leader and a dedicated professional."
Froomin was selected after an extensive screening and background review. During the interview process, he received consistent high marks from interview panels representing law enforcement professionals and the community.
In 1983, Froomin began working for the Foster City Police Department as its first Police Explorer Captain, a worksite-based program for young men and women. He became a community service officer three years later. In 1988, he was hired as a police officer recruit, then as an officer. As an officer, he served in patrol, then as a motorcycle officer and a detective. He was promoted to corporal in 1997, then to sergeant, and by 2000, he was selected to serve as a lieutenant.
Froomin was raised in Foster City and received a bachelor's degree in Public Administration from the University of San Francisco. He has served as the president of the Foster City Lions Club.
The Coronado job opened up after Police Chief Lou Scanlon announced his retirement after six years in Coronado and a 33-year career with the San Diego Police Department.
King said Foster City, which sits on San Francisco Bay, is similar in population and size to Coronado. He is set to oversee a staff of 87 and a budget of $9 million. Froomin will start work May 13.
"We believe he will be a great fit here," King added.
