The Little Things Making Life Special Right Now
Lately I've been feeling like we're in a bit of a sandwich season - the holidays are behind us and the flurry of Spring events haven't quite begun. Personally, I cherish these moments, and I’ve found myself appreciating a few small things that have made everyday life feel special.
1. Extending Our Morning Walk
Poppy is dropped off for school at 8:10, which gives us just enough time to walk over to Milly’s school across town by 8:30. Normally we would head home from there. But now that Buddy is going to a church program a couple of mornings a week and doesn’t need to be there until 9, I’ve been stretching out my morning walk.
That extra thirty minutes has changed my mornings.
I wander down the quieter streets. The ones that aren’t on the direct school path. I notice which houses have fresh paint, which gardens just got a refresh, and who put out new spring décor. It feels unhurried in a way that the rest of the day rarely is.
This small change lets me start my day grounded instead of rushed. And that changes everything.
2. Bee’s Bread
There’s a new sourdough company in town and it’s dangerously good.
The traditional loaves are beautiful, but the cookies are the real surprise. Crisp edges, soft center… the kind where you plan to only eat half and then immediately go back for the rest.
Last weekend we went back down to Puertecitos and I ordered a box to bring along. While we were there, a neighbor sweetly dropped off a craft kit for the girls, and I (reluctantly) handed over the rest of our cookie stash as a thank you.
They’re that good.
3. The Incredible Weather
There, I said it.
I keep seeing the news about the wild weather back east and I feel so grateful to live in a town that is warm with a perfect sea breeze in February. Sure, we had a couple of days of rain earlier this month, which was fun and cozy for a moment, but these 75 degree days has been good for my soul.
One of my favorite rituals is to take the girls to the pool at sunset. I love watching them jump in while I get to catch up with fellow parents who happened to have the same evening plan. At the same time, I look around and appreciate how luck we are to swim in February when most of the country is busy shoveling snow...
It's simple, but it's the best kind of simple.
4. Tartine
There are a handful of true comfort spots in town for me, and Tartine is at the top of that list.
After a rough night of being up too late thinking about anything and everything, I met my mother-in-law there for breakfast. The second I walked in, I felt better. There's just something about the sun shining through the front windows, the tables filled with initmate conversations, the smell of fresh coffee, and the bacon panino that never disappoints.
Some places just hold you a little. Tartine is one of those places for me.
5. My Tribe
There’s a reason Coronado is called the Village.
It’s the friend who texts to split school pick-up. The neighbor kid who always stops to pet your dog. The women who reschedule Galentine’s because half the group has the flu. The book club that shows up every month, whether they’ve read the book or not.
More than the weather, the beautiful homes, or even the beach, it’s the people here who make this island what it is.
These little moments are the ones that remind me why.
